These paintings were made in response to rapid drawings and paintings, made whilst sailing on the Arctic Ocean, as well as photographs taken with both digital and analogue cameras. Georgia Rose Murray was invited to take part in a three week residency, sailing around the Svalbard Archipelago, during October 2018, when natural light was dwindling and Polar Night was approaching fast. Murray was lecturing at Sichuan Fine Arts Institute (an institution which is partnered with DJCAD, where she works currently), at the time of the residency. She found the experience of travelling between the city of Chongqing, where 18 million people live, and Svalbard, where there are more Polar Bears than people, to be other worldly. These paintings were first shown as part of ‘Arctic Cracking’ Exhibition in China in 2019, and then, supported by The British Council, they travelled around the world, to be shown in Scotland.
