Matthew Draper is an Edinburgh-based British artist, born in Stone, Staffordshire. He is primarily known as a draughtsman and considered one of the preeminent artists using chalk pastel on a large scale. He studied at Walsall College of Art and then Falmouth College of Arts, earning a BA (Hons) in Fine Art before moving to Scotland in 1997, where he currently lives and works. Draper's work is characterised by atmospheric and emotive imagery, with the British Isles, particularly the landscapes and cityscapes of Scotland, as his main subject matter. Rather than creating straightforward topographical illustrations, Draper's goal is to make images that are descriptive of the circumstances under which the subject is viewed, conveying a sense of place and acting as emotional reactions to events and experiences. His finished works often drift between abstraction and realism, like captured moments in time.
