Having spent 20 years living and working on the remote west coast of Scotland, Katherine Castle now resides on the edge of the Peak District. Working mainly ‘en plein air’, she is most inspired when directly within the landscape, where immediate responses to the environment, as well as the changing weather and seasons, are her main subjects.

Working with a broad range of materials and a variety of different surfaces allows her the freedom to be expressive and experimental, and Katherine often uses physical elements of nature within her work. Her approach is rooted in developing a deeper sense of and connection to land, sea and the elements. Katherine cites the artists James Morrison and Joan Eardley as particular influences on her own practice, for their immediacy with line and tone.
