FIREPROOF | Ivan Petrychak

Ivan Petrychak is the Press Officer for the King Danylo 24th Mechanised Brigade in Ukraine.

A year in defence of Chasiv Yar.

This exhibition was originally intended to mark the anniversary of the defence of Chasiv Yar by King Danylo’s 24th Mechanised Brigade.

Intent on capturing the town by 9 May, 2024, in time for Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, the Russian army deployed a large number of its most experienced troops for the task. Hoping to use the town as a bridgehead to push further into Ukraine, they intended to take the whole Donetsk region from here. However, thanks to the military skill, resilience, courage, and inventiveness of the 24th Brigade, this small town in Eastern Ukraine remains beyond the enemy’s grasp.

This exhibition is presented on the remnants of fences that stood on the battlefields of the Donetsk region, serving as a reminder that those behind the lines are separated from the war not by fragile walls or distance; only by the bravery of the individuals pictured.

We give you 32 images of life and combat on the front line: 32 stories to represent the 27 months since the 24th Mechanised Brigade was deployed to defend Chasiv Yar.
