donald provan

Donald Provan is a Scottish artist who lives and works in Edinburgh.  He graduated from Edinburgh College of art with a degree in Drawing and Painting in 1986, before going on to gain a Post Graduate Diploma in 1987.

Whether it be in his paintings of river banks and the coastal regions of Scotland, or in his superb and distinctive depictions of fish, the theme of water runs strong through all of Provan's work. The influence of this can be traced back to his early years spent growing up in a coastal mining town in Fife, where the bold intensity of the sea and fish were in stark contrast to the dark shoreline. Working in oils, the artist approaches his fish paintings in a controlled and precise manor, using fine watercolour brushes. Contrastingly, his landscapes are created using a much freer, textural approach, where the final result is very much dictated by the paint.

Donald has exhibited widely throughout the UK and his work is held in private collections both nationally and internationally.
