Iain Campbell is a Scottish ceramicist who lives in Forres, Moray. After moving to the area from Glasgow twenty years ago, he fell in love with the big skies, woodlands, beaches and hills that would become the inspiration behind his work in clay. Iain creates beautiful and unique sculptural ceramics that have been smoke, raku or pit fired to create unpredictable surfaces, and he is drawn to simple shapes inspired by human, animal and natural forms. Pieces are often created to be in conversation with each other, tangled together or to stand quietly in companionable silence. Drawn to soft, smudgy overlapping colours, his works will sometimes have a silky finish using terra sigillata, and at other times have a rougher finish using washes or patina glazes. Exploration and surprise is at the heart of all of Iain’s work, whether that be in the colours achieved or the way pieces interact with each other.
