Genre Scenes is a collection of works by Dundee based artist Gavin Young. Described as ‘bringing Breughel to the streets of suburbia’ by Duncan MacMillan in The Scotsman, Gavin’s work provides a fascinating snapshot of everyday life in Scotland. This solo exhibition showcases pieces created with the aid of a camera obscura – a device that both captivates and frustrates the artist in equal measure. Whilst deeming the device ‘almost unworkable’, it is the warm colours and soft edges produced by the camera that has captured the imagination of the artist and influenced his work. As part of the exhibition, the gallery will have a working camera obscura for visitors to try out for themselves. You can read more about Gavin’s experiments with the device in Resipole Studios’ very own blog.
